Communicating effectively in a multi-generational workplace

One day

This course is an essential primer for anyone working in a generationally-integrated setting.

In Generational Diversity we examine the three main generations in today’s workplace: the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. We examine the elements that create group identity for each generation, each generation’s rules for living, expectations of themselves and others, and communication styles. We show how these differences impact interpersonal relationships, and provide tools to assist in developing solid working intergenerational relationships.

By the end of this workshop you will have an understanding of how your own communication style is effected by generational and other cultural factors, and how those from other generations and backgrounds might perceive you. You will have a toolkit to experiment with effective communication techniques for communicating more effectively with colleagues, partners and clients from different cultural and generational backgrounds.

Program content

  • What makes a group identity: we outline the ingredients that create group identity, including geography, climate, history, language, technology and various types of tradition
  • Demographic changes: the facilitator engages the participants in a lively examination of the factors that create the group identities that make up the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y
  • Tools to approach intergenerational relations: we provide some basic communication models that can be used to facilitate relationships when working intergenerationally
  • Specific cases: participants are requested to present the specific challenges that they face. We put the tools in our kit to use and apply them to these challenges through role playing scenarios
