Manager as Coach

Creating an environment for optimal employee performance

The key task of managers and leaders is to create the environment where employees perform at their best. A Coach-manager knows how to create that environment by working with each employee who reports to them in the appropriate circumstances. Coaching is based on the assumption that each individual is inherently creative, resourceful, and whole. The Coach-manager is therefore concerned to develop that understanding in employees – helping them see that they can solve problems and accomplish difficult tasks if they trust in themselves and learn to see the task in the appropriate context.

Coach-managers don’t necessarily show someone how to do it – they use their emotional intelligence to have the employee address the question that will move them in a direction to accomplish the task without the coach-manager having to do the task themselves – so that the next time the task arises the employee knows how to do it and will have the confidence to try themselves.
